Ash – ‘Seasonal recipes’

Ash class cook a seasonal recipe once every half term.  We try to make the sessions as fun and hands-on as possible.  Some of the ingredients are grown in the school grounds by the gardening club and this helps the younger children to understand how their food is produced.  The recipe sheets that the children take home includes fun facts about ingredients and healthy eating tips.  This year the children have been particularly keen to try the savoury recipes including pumpkin soup and pizza and had a wonderful time making their own fresh pasta with Italian music playing in the background on Italian Culture Day.

Oak –Healthy Lunchboxes

In the Autumn Term, Oak class learnt about healthy eating and how to pack a nutritionally balanced lunchbox.  They worked in groups to plan and cook healthy recipes including Italian bread, creamy tomato soup, pizza and spicy chicken wraps.  Everyone was encouraged to try new foods and to practise some basic cookery skills, such as, chopping, juicing, grating, weighing, kneading and rolling.

Pine – Design a new snack bar

Pine class learnt about new product development in the Spring Term.  After discussing healthy eating, the children worked in groups to adjust a standard flapjack recipe to be either lower in fat or sugar or higher in calcium or fibre.  The resulting snack bars were all delicious.  Following a visit from a local packaging illustrator, the children individually designed a wrapper for their bar, taking into consideration its unique selling point to the consumer.
